Choosing to protest or campaign for change

Protests can be done peacefully, stigma on protest ceases to exist. Collaborating with like-minded people to raise public awareness can be rewarding and it provides an opportunity to communicate important messages on significant issues like climate change and environmental destruction. Mass Lobbies, like that run by the Climate Coalition – a partnership including Christian Aid, WWF and National Trust – attract thousands of people, often with hundreds of MPs joining to meet constituents.
Residents across Surrey are already taking part in peaceful protests to ensure their voices and concerns are heard relating to the threats we face in Surrey from extreme weather, poor air quality, and threats to their children’s future.

There are a whole range of great benefits to engaging in peaceful protest, including:

  • Creating community cohesion: It allows us to connect with like-minded people and build on shared values.
  • Raising awareness: Protests could be a great opportunity to raise public awareness of the imminent impacts of climate change and the need for action.
  • Looking after your mental health: By participating in a direct action, you can mitigate eco-anxiety and motivate yourself to further efforts.
