Influence the Government

It’s your MP’s job to listen to the issues that are most important to constituents, and platform those issues at the highest levels of decision-making.
But the reality is, that the MPs will start acting on resident concerns only if they get enough emails about certain subjects.
Alongside on-the-ground action to ensure our communities thrive, we must keep telling local authorities and our MPs what Government is doing well, and where change is needed. Strong leadership from Government sets the direction that drives investment and legislation to improve the health system, boost the local economy, and tackle environmental problems.
A huge number of new and re-elected MPs in the House of Commons ran platforms that focused on the main concerns of many Surrey residents – the NHS and local health services, flooding and the state of our rivers, the cost of living, and the restoration of local nature and habitats.
Surrey MPs recognise the impacts of climate change on Surrey residents and are putting this as one of the most pressing issues that the county needs to work towards. Building a relationship between communities and MPs, and holding MPs to account for the pledges that we voted for are key parts of a well-functioning democracy. Many of Surrey's major challenges, including air pollution and inefficient homes, can also become great opportunities for change. Through coordinated government action, there is a great potential for an improvement in overall quality of life. Engaging with your local government for action has multiple benefits including:

  • Creating a healthier community to live in by supporting the NHS and seeking action on air pollution.
  • Encouraging support for people impacted by high energy bills or flooding.
  • Boosting the local economy by creating new green job opportunities.
