Make use of the library of things

Imagine a nice clutter-free home, and a bank account full of cash you’ve saved by not spending on items you barely use. Well, that’s exactly what the Library of Things is here for. Here you can borrow a variety of items, including tools, games, camping equipment, and more… for free.

These libraries are there to help your neighbours and community to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills, save money, and reduce emissions. The Guildford Library of Things – a partnership between Guildford Library and Zero Carbon Guildford – has over 120 items that you can borrow. By avoiding purchasing new items, the local residents can save between £6000 to £8000 and around 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) every month.

By borrowing instead of buying, there are a variety of benefits including:

  • Saving hundreds of pounds every month and space in their homes by not buying items they would barely use.
  • Minimising waste and associated carbon emissions by reducing the number of products that end up in landfills.
  • Bridging economic disparities and promoting social equity by making items accessible to all.
  • Fostering the sense of community by sharing goods.
