Prevent waste

Almost everyone in the UK recycles, did you know that many items collected as recycling do not end up being reused? This can be because people are putting waste in the wrong bin, or due to contamination by food remains, labels, or other materials. The recycling process also requires a significant amount of energy to sort and remake waste into materials that can be used again.

So when possible, generating less waste in the first place is always the best approach.

According to Waste and Resources Action Programme’s (WRAP) 2024 Recycling Tracker Survey, 90% of UK residents regularly recycle their waste (WRAP 2024 Recycling Tracker Survey in the UK).

We’re also seeing a rise in the number of people geared towards preventing waste in the first place (the most preferred option in the waste hierarchy), or finding ways to reuse and repair items (Waste Mission Understanding the Waste Hierarchy).

Recycling centres play a vital role in waste reduction and resource conservation by diverting waste from landfills and enabling the reuse of materials. The best approach is preventing waste generation in the first place. This would entail a variety of benefits including:

  • Saving money: Reducing waste can mean buying less in the first place. This will save you money that you would have spent on goods that you don’t really need.
  • Mitigating climate change: Reducing the amount of waste that would end up in landfills and recycling centre means that you have contributed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from landfills and recycling processes.
  • Enjoying a clutter-free space: Buying less to reduce waste would lead to less clutter in your home. Keeping our personal space clean and neat is beneficial for your mental health.
