Save energy at home

Members of the Surrey community are coming together to support each other with the cost-of-living crisis by guiding the residents on how to reduce energy bills. Residents are being trained to become Home Energy Advice Taskforce (HEAT) Energy Champions who support their neighbours to start a journey towards energy efficiency. Surrey County Council and Zero Carbon Guildford have teamed up to deliver free home energy surveys for Surrey residents. To help with improving energy efficiency, Energy Champions visit homes, conduct thermal imaging surveys to show where the house is losing heat (and money), provide free draught-proofing measures, and support residents in identifying energy efficiency or retrofit grants they might be eligible for.

The HEAT has trained 80 Energy Champions to deliver high quality energy advice – and the best part is that it is all funded by a grant, so the service is entirely free to use with no strings attached. So far, over 550 surveys have been delivered in 2024 alone, with a 4.9/5 rating in customer satisfaction.

Losing heat from your home means you are wasting money. With two-thirds of Surrey's homes being rated as thermally inefficient (Zero Carbon Guildford), you're probably pumping cash out of your house to disappear into thin air. Understanding your home's energy use will not just save you money but will also bring a host of other benefits including:

  • Staying cosy in the winter and cool in the summer through better thermal efficiency.
  • Preventing condensation, damp, and mould by reducing heat loss.
  • Reducing pressure on local health services through less cold-related illness.
  • Contributing to climate mitigation by directly reducing the carbon emissions from your home.
  • Supporting your community, improving your knowledge of home energy, and earning extra income by becoming an Energy Champion in your local area.
