Get subsidies for the land that your business owns

Surrey is a fairly rural county, yet we have much less farming than many parts of the UK: About 20 to 30% of land in Surrey is used for agriculture, compared to over 75% in some counties.
Local food production is extremely beneficial for our health, economy, and the local environment. To produce healthy food, the land should be healthy as well – yet in Surrey, the rate of nature decline is higher than the national average.

Biodiversity loss threatens the food chains that feed us and the ecosystem which supports us. We need to restore nature to support our farmers, while ensuring land is well-managed to ensure it can support a variety of plants and animals.

To restore the balance in nature, there are now grants, subsidies, and partnerships available for people who own land and businesses of which premises could be used for nature recovery. These include; Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and Community Energy.

These will become particularly beneficial in light of adverse impacts of climate change – unpredictable and extreme weather events will affect growing seasons and bring both more flooding and drought. Grants, subsidies, or partnerships could help you as a landowner to counter future uncertainty and contribute to nature conservation. It can also bring other benefits including:

  • Playing a crucial role in restoring Surrey's nature and habitats.
  • Turning unused land into a revenue generator.
  • Creating new income streams as habitats develop.
  • Improving employee happiness and wellbeing by enabling increased access to nature.
