Reduce potholes

Lots of investment has gone into Surrey’s roads to make improvements to the highway and repair potholes, but did you know extreme weather events which are linked to climate change are a contributing factor to why potholes appear. We are getting more heavy downpours with the warmer atmosphere holding more moisture, and extreme weather conditions freeze and create cracks on the road surfaces.

In Surrey, the biggest contributor to climate change is emissions from transport. The more cars on the road, the more emissions and pressure on the road which leads to more wear and tear. If we want to keep the road safe and in a good condition, we could give up a car journey or two every week. This will reduce fuel costs, all while preventing the need for excess road repairs.

Reducing the number of car trips each week can help to prevent the return of the potholes, and can bring many more benefits to you, including:

  • Saying goodbye to endless traffic - Surrey is one of the worst five traffic hotspots in the UK.
  • Boosting your mental and physical health through exercise.
  • Avoiding air pollution: Did you know that you get 10 times more pollution when sitting in an idling car than from walking past? So do your lungs and heart a favour by walking instead of driving.
  • Enjoying the improved neighbourhood: By reducing the amount spent on potholes, your tax will be spent elsewhere that would benefit the community.
