Rehome your bike in Surrey

Many of us remember the joy of getting a bike as a child and the freedom we felt riding it round our local area. However, lots of these bikes and the ones we bought ourselves as adults are not being used; taking up space and gathering cobwebs in sheds and garages.

Surrey Bike Bank is determined to get these bikes back out on the roads again. They offer free repair events and sessions to teach Surrey residents how to care for their bike (Bike Bank Events). However, for those of us who have more bikes than we need, have outgrown them or are not using them, there is a way of clearing that clutter. You can donate your bike at your local CRC (Community Recycling Centre) where some are sold in their reuse shops, or they are sent off-site to be repaired by apprentices or people in prison. This not only brings bikes back to life but also helps develop valuable skills that can lead to qualifications and future employment.

Once repaired, these bikes are given back into the community, creating a wide range of benefits:

  • Providing free, reliable transport to vulnerable residents
  • Encouraging children to travel actively to school
  • Reducing traffic and improving air quality
  • Supporting physical and mental wellbeing
  • Offering access to places not easily reached by public transport
  • Reducing demand for new bikes, helping conserve resources
  • Building skills and opportunities for apprentices and prisoners

Since launching in 2022, Surrey Bike Bank has helped rehome over 750 bikes. These have gone to people who need them most, including domestic abuse survivors, refugees and asylum seekers, low-income households, children receiving free school meals, people experiencing homelessness, and job seekers. A bike is more than just transport; it is independence, opportunity and freedom. And by donating an unused bike, you can help pass that freedom on to someone else.
