Improve your cycle confidence on the road

Perhaps you fancy getting more exercise, improving your mental health, and saving money, by replacing a few car journeys with a cycle ride. If you’re enthusiastic, but not feeling confident, an adult cycle training course might be the answer you’re looking for. Every year around 11,000 people take a cycle training course in Surrey to improve their cycle confidence on the road.

You’ve probably heard of ‘Bikeability’ in schools, but Surrey Bikeability courses aren’t just for kids – there’s a host of adult and community cycle training courses too. And because Surrey residents have a range of challenges when it comes to cycling – from challenging hills and town centre traffic to cultural obstacles or items of clothing that make cycling tricky – the courses are very popular.

You might never forget how to ride a bike, but that doesn’t mean we all find it easy to get back in the saddle if we haven’t cycled for a long time.

A range of courses are offered throughout Surrey during school holidays. Courses range from adult cycle confidence, parent and teen and family cycle training, as well Surrey Bikeability 'catch-up' courses for children who missed out on the opportunity at school. During the training, riders improve their skills and confidence through practicing how to manoeuvre in traffic using the core skills of observation, communication, road positioning and understanding priorities. Taking a cycle training course will boost your confidence on the road, but the long-term benefits of cycling are much wider:

  • Get fit and feel the mental health boosts of exercise.
  • Save money - especially by replacing short journeys that add up in fuel costs.
  • Play a part in improving air quality and reducing traffic emissions.
  • Less cars on the road makes travel safer - and means less potholes!
