Build a community against poverty

The cost of living has risen sharply since 2021, outpacing wage growth and creating a widespread cost-of-living crisis (Great Britain cost of living increase 2025| Statista). It is now regarded as the most pressing national issue, with increasing numbers of people struggling to afford essentials such as food and energy (Britons and the cost of living, January 2026 | YouGov). The COVID-19 pandemic and global geopolitical shifts have disrupted resource distribution, driving up consumer prices. As a result, more people—regardless of postcode—are finding it difficult to meet their basic needs.

While there are ways to reduce spending and community groups and charities exist to support those in need, access to this information is not universal. Many people simply don’t know where to turn for help—or how to offer support to others.

End Poverty Surrey is a great place to start. It calls on individuals, communities, and organisations to pledge their commitment to ending poverty and to join forces in supporting those in need. The initiative aims to build a movement that strengthens local support networks, improves livelihoods, and reduces poverty across Surrey.

Whether through running food banks and community pantries, offering financial advice, or providing training for those in need and local schools, End Poverty Surrey works to unite collective efforts and make a real difference for people who are struggling.

Like End Poverty Surrey, there are many organisations that support local residents by providing essential items and financial guidance, and they are always grateful for extra helping hands. Whether it’s running a community fridge or food bank, or offering advice to those facing financial challenges, every contribution makes a meaningful difference—not only for the beneficiaries but for those who volunteer as well. Volunteering offers benefits such as:

  • Building new skills – from communication and problem-solving to organisational and leadership abilities.
  • Strengthening community ties – helping create a more resilient and supportive local environment.
  • Expanding your network – connecting with like-minded individuals and community leaders.
  • Enhancing well-being – giving back fosters a sense of purpose and boosts mental health.
  • Improving your community – contributing to a safer, more vibrant, and welcoming place for everyone.
