Manage garden waste

You might have come here to find out how to throw away your garden waste – but did you know you can make useful resources out of your green waste?
Instead of chucking your green waste, why not try turning it into compost instead? You can use your garden waste to save money, put nutrients back into your garden to keep it healthy and looking great, and play a significant role in reducing emissions from burning the waste or sending it in to landfill. You can even get discounted compost bins in Surrey to get you started.

In England, we send over 5 million tonnes of biodegradable waste to landfills every year, which is 79% of the UK’s total biodegradable municipal waste we throw into landfills (DEFRA). This is also the equivalent of over half a million pounds worth of peat-free compost! Every home compost bin diverts around 150kg of waste from landfill per year (BBC), so if we all compost at home we can have a real impact on cutting the amount of waste we generate.

Composting is crucial for soil regeneration and will keep your garden looking great. It can also bring lots of extra benefits to your family and the environment, including:

  • Turning waste removal into a fun activity: Nourish your garden while having fun with your children.
  • Maintaining your garden in a healthier way while contributing to the biodiversity of wildlife in your garden.
  • Mitigating climate change: When garden waste or food go to landfill they produce methane, a greenhouse gas which is about 20 times more effective at driving warming than carbon dioxide (CO₂). Composting still produces greenhouse gases, but it has a significantly lower impact on climate change than sending your garden waste to landfill.
  • Contributing to your organisation's ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) portfolio and environmental sustainability, while addressing waste management challenges.
