Use your garden to benefit nature

Protecting nature and wildlife ranks as the number one priority for UK residents when asked about policies to tackle climate change and environmental degradation (Climate Outreach). In Surrey, 11% of our native species have gone extinct in the last few decades (Surrey Wildlife Trust), so it’s important that we don’t just rely on government policy, but that we take collective actions to reverse nature loss.

Thousands of Surrey residents are doing their part by turning their gardens into thriving homes for wildlife. But this doesn’t just benefit wildlife – research has shown that the more variety of nature we have in our gardens, the greater our wellbeing.

Accommodating wildlife in your garden is a great way to restore your local environment, but it brings a whole range of benefits to you as well, including:

  • Making your garden look beautiful in bloom and providing a space for pollinators such as bees to work their magic.
  • Providing food and shelter for local wildlife: witness your garden becoming the perfect habitat for insects, birds, and small mammals.
  • Saving money on expensive and harmful pesticides and chemicals: Save money and provide a rich habitat for earthworms by creating a home compost.
  • Improving your physical and mental wellbeing by spending more time in the fresh air and nurturing your wildlife sanctuary at your doorstep.
